Sharing the Henry Rollins Note
This general idea can’t be repeated enough. It’s pretty much what I posted from Rick Steves on my prior post. I especially relate to the final lines, “…come back and go, “ohhhhh.” And the lightbulb goes on.” The thing is, that “lightbulb” – the epiphany – can’t be communicated, really. The travel experience is largely indescribable (the people, places, absurdities, and did i mention the people?) and should be experienced first-hand. That’s why when we travelers open our mouths about it we sound pretentious (Henry...

So, I definitely didn’t keep up with this blog AT ALL while on my travels. I kept pretty busy while traveling and spotty wi-fi, limited time spent on the internet, and clunky technology made it a bit of a hassle. But enough with the litany of excuses. I think it will be fun to start from the beginning; a chance to relive the trip, maybe. So we go back to Italy, where the trip started and look at some pretty locales. My camera has a kitschy, though convenient panoramic feature that makes for some fun photos. Here are summaries of most of the destinations Sara, Erika, and I visited...

|Pictured: Segovia, Spain| This is really a reminder to those travellers who live by this doctrine already, and words of straight, down to earth inspiration for future travellers. I don’t have to agree with the specifics discussed here, or even some of his overall travel ‘tactics’. But it’s insightful (especially from an American’s perspective), and in my limited experience I find it largely agreeable. Few people can speak this eloquently and genuinely communicate something that we travellers all come to know. So give Rick a minute and let him...

|Pictured: Florence, Italy| To Italy, Italy. I’m headed back! One of my very first travel adventures – and my first solo – was Italy, just after graduation from University in 2006. In a leisurely self-guided tour I flew into Bergamo, headed east to Venice, then Florence, and finally Rome. The trip produced some great photos and friends. It was also about the time my wife and I started dating. Now, I get to head back with my wife and a friend to visit Milan for the first time and re-visit my favorite Italian spot – Florence! Or as I call it, the...
Read MoreSometimes, it’s just time.
|Pictured: La Fortuna, Costa Rica| Comfort is a double-edged sword. Faced with beguiling flexibility and creature comforts, you might find yourself accepting of things, continuing to chug along. Things become just OK. You stagnate. You force toleration. When it comes to work, sometimes you say to yourself, “Oh, shut up” and continue to collect that paycheck. For me, however, this is NOT one of those times. I’ve got bigger things to pursue. Never one to prioritize work above leisure and life’s other priorities, I could always see myself taking off...
